4 out of 5 stars Avatar: The Game   March 22, 2010
Mrs. J. Catley (Cambs UK)
The game lived up to expectations. Both my boys have been thrilled with it. It isn't a duplication of the film more of a prequel so not all the characters are the same but the spectacular scenery is just as good.

bought as a present for my 10yr old son as a reward for doing well in his school transfer tests. He enjoyed the game.

4 out of 5 stars better than people say   March 10, 2010

ok first off, i'm not saying that this is the greatest game i've ever played, partially because im not a hugely avid gamer, and the games i have played are the indestructible Ratchet and Clank series, Littlebigplanet, and a few varying other games too, i'm not really a fan of having to rip peoples guts out in a game so this was absolutely brilliant for me. i completed both campaigns in around 15-17 hours each. the gameplay is fairly linear, but it is fun roaming round environments and just watching the scenery (providing something doesn't attack you, which i found is very common, because when you kill creatures in an area, a few minutes later they all come back). I do think an extremely good game could be made out of this franchise. perhaps a kindof freeroamer it's a movie tie in, so i wasn't expecting too much, but after completing it i feel very satisfied.

the PRO's
the graphics for the environments get a good 8.5 out of 10, but the sheer business of the environments makes you forget about the odd 2dimensional Bush swaying in the foreground. for the characters you speak to the graphics recieve a lower 6 out of 10(it would have been higher had i not played Final Fantasy XIII yesterday). but it doesn't detract from the fun of the game. it is extremely fun in both campaigns, even as a Na'Vi sympathiser, it was entertaining and challenging to beat them on the RDA campaign and especially using the Slow-motion button to get some great shots at viperwolves. the Na'Vi campaign is sort of a schrodinger's cat, it is more difficult but easier at the same time and just as entertaining as the other campaign.
driving the vehicles and riding creatures is a heck of a lot of fun.

the CON's
the voice acting is weak, some of the Na'Vi on the game have distinctly english accents which come from not greatly animated mouths, i think with a bit of time and money spent on another game, they could make realistic movements and totally immerse you in it and i think personally that Square Enix could do a great justice to the franchise if they ever decided to take it on (but no turn-based battles please. the story isn't great, it centres around you being a signals specialist employed to gather OOPS, Spoiler! but the real strong point of the game is the environments which i just love exploring now, even having finished the game. another thing is the controls for the animals, somewhat klunky, you expect it for the RDA vehicles, but having to press a button to go forward or backward on my Ikran? no thankyou, just glide around and ill take care of the directions, no "reverse" button ok boy? i also encountered a somewhat irritating glitch on the last level of the na'vi campaign in which i was unable to climb vines, but this was quickly solved by jumping on some nearby rocks to get to the top.

i should say that the story is not the same as the film (a good save, Mr Cameron) it is a prequel which takes place in a clan unrelated to the Omaticaya Clan, only one character from the film is present, Colonel Miles Quaritch, (who i didn't recognise to begin with, better Graphics Please, the PS3 can cope!!!) and even he is only in it for a short while.

overall it is a fun game, not without it's errors and glitches, and a better one could be made, but this will do in the meantime

2 out of 5 stars Not for me   February 22, 2010

A very basic style of game play, reminded me of a ps2 game rather than a next gen one.
Actions look forced and unnatural and despite the fact that the world was impressive at times, a large amount of it is merely scenery and rocks and ledges which appear perfectly traversable cannot be stepped on. As other reviews have mentioned, many of the features from the film were lost when making the game, such as the navi/animal link (through the hair).

One of the main issues I had was the fact that there are so few places you can travel in comparison to the map. Only certain vines can be climbed (in a very basic style as well) and the banshees can only land on specific areas as well.

If anyone is in the mood for what can only be described as a good playstation 2 game, then go ahead, but this did not reach a decent enough standard for the PS3
