gamer March 12, 2010 Paul Millard (York,England) great game apart from not knowing where your comtact is on the map after each mission or location
Saboteur March 10, 2010 B. W. Soper (UK) I wasn't expecting too much from this title so I was pleasantly surprised as I went through the game and found myself greatly entertained. OK so the graphics and control systems have some short-comings but you can forgive that for the fun that it gives, a bit like living with a bad mannered smelly old pet! The fact that I must mention is the amount of hours this game has kept me amused. Admittedly the missions were taken care of in the usual double-quick time but the free-play section took me days and days to complete. All in all, not the best game in the world but if you measure quality in terms of longevity I have no hesitation in recommending this game.
A solid game with some nice touches March 9, 2010 Mr. Andrew Dw Sumner 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
In a gaming world full of titles with similar story lines or genre it is often quick and easy to stereotype one game with another, and then throw critisism at it because it doesnt follow the same principle. It goes without saying that The Saboteur takes a lot of ideology from titles like GTA and Assassinns Creed, and as such will be placed in the same category as these titles. What is worth mentioning is that the Saboteur is NOT a copy of these games in my opinion, and in fact only adds yet another great title to the genre.
You play the character "Sean" who was an Irish racing driver with a bit of a shady past, who gets caught up in the initial invasion of France by the Nazi`s and, as a result of his involvement at the time, is given a reason to hate the Nazis and therefore want to join the french resistance. What ensues as a result is a mix of driving, stealth, espionage, sabotage, climbing, hiding, sneaking and all out battles with the Nazi`s on the streets of Paris.
The graphics are not benchmark, but are still clear, crisp and extremely well drawn and some of the effects used in the game are top quality. In areas where your influence has been felt the gaming world can be seen in full colour, whereas the areas that still feel the Nazi oppression are drawn using a Sin City style feel, highlighting such things as the trademark Nazi swastika in deep red whilst all around is black and white. Street lamps and windows cast out a dim yellow light and the red armbands of the german soldiers opress the dark and dreary picture being cast. All in all it is a very well thought out depiction of a city being held by an invading force and sets the scene well. It also gives Sean a good way of determining how far out his influence has reached.
Gameplay is good, with a liberal amount of driving, climbing, sneaking around and the inevitable fight as you carry out your mission parameter. Missions can be played as you see fit, and the game follows the "sandbox" genre allowing you to move around freely and conduct sabotage on German installations that will assist you later on in the game. If you take down a Nazi watchtower, it stays down, meaning you dont have to repeatedly destroy the same object.
Driving is similar to most gaming types of the same design and once you are used to it you will be zipping round the streets with no major concerns. One critisism in the damage engine used- Although gunfire will produce bullet holes on your vehicle, if you crash the car (which is highly likely) you appear to cause no damage to the vehicle, likewise crashing into another vehicle will not cause damage to either.
Climbing is a necessaray part of the game, and is carried out by grasping onto ledges or areas that Sean can reach. It can be fustrating at times, but generally it works.
Shooting is straight forward, however there is no lock-on facility so all aiming is done manually. This only adds to the drama in my opinion and makes the game more playable. On average the weapons you use cause a lot of damage to the enemy usually resulting in a first shot kill dependant on where on the body you hit.
Sneaking around is fun, and the ability to change into Nazi uniforms works well, unless you bump into Gestapo who see right through your disguise. Act suspisciosly and you get the same result- Why would a soldier plant a stick on dynamite to one of his own vehicles?? When not in disguise walking around the streets of Paris waving a weapon around is another surefire way to end up in a firefight.
The game itself does have a fairly adult theme to it and as such Seans dialogue can be a bit colourful at times. One of the Resistance headquarters is based in a brothel, so expect to see a bit of skin in the game too, though there is a feature in the options that allow you to cover up the modesty of the girls with tactfully placed stars.
All in all I feel that this is a well thought out game that covers a sensitive time in our history very well, using some clever effects to add a bit of atmosphere. It does have some small issues, hence the 4 starss but all in all this is an excellent game that should not be overlooked. Entertaining, thought provoking, dark, moody and atmospheric. Those worried that this is just another GTA copy, or a sneakfest game, be reassured that it is not. Yes, there is a certain amount involved to it, but it is also quite definately a shooter to boot.
Well worth a try. Highly reccomended.

Great concept, & a huge environment to explore, however the gameplay is weak, & the vehicles steer like icebergs. After just a few hours in I was losing interest and feel very disappointed, I suspect this one will be traded in quite soon.......unfinished!
This really shows what the PS3 is capable of. March 3, 2010 BIG Apple Drinks Company (Wales) Their is few games that are so mind numblingly beautiful that you can sit back and just be impressed with the world around you, but this is one of those games.
The scale of Paris and the ability to play this game open ended like GTA makes this one of the best games I have played in a long time.
One warning don't play this by your kids as the language is terrible and my 4 year son has picked up some terrible language that we are having to incourage him not to use as we were unaware that he listens to me playing this game, wait for the kids to go to bed and enjoy this fantastic game.
Also note it contains a lot of nudity.
