The best PS3 game EVER! Xbox 360 owners envi us! July 19, 2010 Movie Star 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game is epic. So epic that i bought God of war 1 and 2 to get the story straight.
The graphics are great and the violence and fighting techniques in the game are great. And it is one of the games i have that is worth the money because this game is LONG! You get the feeling that the makers of the game put thought in this game instead of rushing it on to the market to get money.
You grasp the story well and the cut scenes during the game make it look like a film.
The best thing about the game is that it starts with a scene from the end that you have to play to get to. which is exciting.
A must buy if your a PS3 fanatic.
well worth a buy July 19, 2010 Mr. G. Coaton (northern ireland) right guys firstly if you liked heavenly sword you will love this.
controls are very easy to get used to.........graphics is up there with encharted if not better.........violence is hardcore
from start to finish its epic
i never played GOd of war 1 or 2 and it doesnt matter had a blast.
Pure action with some thought July 18, 2010 Mr Craig P Dicken If you like to just charge in and destroy all your enemies at once, this is the game for you!
Graphics are amazing and the sheer scale of the thing is brilliant. Some of the scenes are just breathtaking. Puzzles are welcomed, some hard, some make you think and others are quite straightforward.
There are some bits of the game which are insanely frustrating, but there are not many, chasing Helios is one of them, but at least you get your 'reward' for doing so...
Play this in chunks and you will absolutely love it. Warning though, the game is very bloodthirsty so you might fall in love with it even more!
Tough July 14, 2010 richyw1 Great game, great graphics and one of those must own titles if you have a PS3.
I played the game through on hard difficulty straight away and it is amazingly difficult. I think I am up to about 250 deaths (it tells you the statistics, i havent counted!) and you will have incredibly frustrating moments when you are doing the same thing over and over and over... This is made harder by the fact the restart points are often right at the start of the large/boss battle so you have to go through eveything again before you get to the bit where you die - then you die again and repeat! (hence the presonal rating of 4 stars for fun instead of 5). When you die you will continually be offered to play through on easy level which gets annoying and is irreversible should you choose to do so. It is totally worth persevering though (or maybe trying a different difficulty at first!) and you finish the game satisfied that you have played one of the best games around. The weapons and items are fun and some of the bad guys and bosses have to be seen to be believed, particularly in the cut scenes. Looking forward to the next installment.
Disappointing July 7, 2010 Saturn (UK) I liked:
-The opening is epic. Kratos really hits the ground running in an epic fight with Gaia against Poseidon. The sense of scale and graphics at this point are very good.
-The gore. They don't hold back on this one. Some of the deaths are ridiculously gory, but also ridiculously satisfying. My faves are an eye-gouging, a decapitation with bare hands, and faces being smashed in.
-The combat is, most of the time, very good, and basically a more refined system than God of War 2. The weapon switching is done particularly well, as it can be done mid-combo, allowing for some deep attack combos.
-The setting and style are really good. Anyone who knows anything about Greek mythology will be surprised to see so many different beasts in a video game that are (reasonably) faithful to the mythos as a whole, even if the story isn't.
I disliked:
-The graphics and level design are quite inconsistent, some levels are great but others look like they obviously spent less time on them. The early levels are spectacular, but the middle levels are less so. Overall, it seems a little rushed, which is disappointing especially considering the short play time.
-The boss fights for Hermes and Helios are disappointing, and lack the imagination and amazing character design of Hades and Poseidon. I'd have preferred it if they spent more time on them rather than some of the less inspired levels.
-Is it necessary for Kratos to go to the Underworld again? He's already been there, seen it, got the T-Shirt. To me this felt like a way to stretch out the length of the campaign.
-Come to think of it, The game is pretty short - about 8 hours.
-It's a bit QTE-heavy for an 'action game'.
-Kratos is such a douche. He hates absolutely everything, and is the most violent and angry video game character ever. Imagine if Marcus Fenix had steroids for breakfast, that's what he's like. I just can't empathise with Kratos or his plight which pretty much destroys the whole world as well as Olympus.
-There are A LOT of plot holes, including a ridiculous explanation which is meant to explain why Kratos is 'Good' while the Olympians are 'Evil'. From my point of view, Kratos is the evil one, and the Olympians are probably more a shade of grey than anything else.
-The weapons are pretty limited and all more or less come down to metal bits on chains. Therefore most of Kratos' attacks are simply sweeping with said chains. This makes it very easy to take on many enemies, but when fighting only one I would have preferred a more focused, duellist-like combat style.
-The combat is very similar to God of War 2. Although that was one of the best action games on the PS2, there seems to be more competition on the PS3, and other games have more fluent and varied combat systems, and God of War 3's can seem a little aged in comparison.
-I've never been a fan of control schemes which use the control stick to dodge. I'd much rather prefer it if the stick were used for camera control instead.
-There are a couple of loading glitches.
Overall, I did enjoy the game, but felt a little disappointed. For me, it failed to deliver on the hype, and also on the promise of God of War 2. There were moments of pure genius, but there were too many flaws (although none of them game-breaking). It felt a little rushed. And I can see why: Some of the other games in the same genre are beginning to move ahead and innovate, whereas God of War still retains the same formula as it did in it's PS2 days. Despite all this, it is a fun 8 or so hours, and when it comes down in price, to maybe £20 I would say it's definitely worth a try, even if you haven't played the previous versions.
