Tekken 6 May 19, 2010 Ms. Tashbila Salamut (London, UK) This game is really fun when playing more than one player. I bought the game because it brings back memories of the first ever tekken on PS1. I would recommend the game as its really good.
Expecting some more May 13, 2010 Á. Rodrigues (Portugal) Well, being a fan of the Tekken series (I played hours and hours Tekken 4 and 5) I expected 6 to be completely fantastic, I had huge hopes for this game. When I got it on my mail I was really happy because I would play this masterpiece right away. So I started the game and... some of my expectations were crushed. Seriously, the graphics are good, the gameplay is very tight (Tekken style of course), and after all is a pretty fun game - minus the horrible online play, it's impossible to have a lag free match and diconnections are way too frequent, big disapointement. As a Tekken fan I was truly disapointed with the game, but over time I got over it and enjoyed it actually, played through all modes including Scenario Campaign (a strange game type that I don't think suits Tekken but it was OK). Overall it's a good game that I think the average player wiil enjoy due to it's simple gameplay and huge roster of unique characters, but I expected much more.
Not like previous Tekkens May 10, 2010 Mr. Wayne Gilliland Tekken 6 is a lot different than previous releases, and I found it hard to enjoy because the main section of the game is tekken force mode (from previous games) I prefered it when you had to complete story mode with every character to learn what was gonig on in the game. I would give it a 4 out of 10
What a drag May 3, 2010 Mr. D. L. Charlton (Durham, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It was with much anticipation that I first bought Tekken 6. Trailers promised a fluid fighting game that would build upon the success of Tekken 5 with an unprecedented cast of characters. All of our old favourites are back, but the overall roster of characters is now bigger than ever putting thousands of moves as your disposal. Tekken Force has made a return... this time as the game's central scenario mode. I won't bore you with the (non} story, but lets just say you will wish you never had to play it.
It is now required that you play through each and every broken level of the Scenario Mode, which follows the adventures of new characters Lars and Alisa in order to unlock every other character's story mode. It's typical anime fair with a young amnesiac male lead character accompanied by an attractive female android and the boredom doesn't take long to set in. Action stages instantly switch from insultingly easy to insanely hard halfway through. Equipment must be purchased in order to make your characters stand a chance later on. Scenario Mode is what you get when you cross a cookie cutter brawler seemingly 20 years out of date with a very basic action RPG, with none of the polish that would otherwise have been put into either.
Onto the fighting itself and it all seems heavily fixated on range, even moreso than weapon based fighters such as Soul Calibur. The feeling of not getting close enough to your opponent in a particularly challenging battle is incredibly jarring and the sense of urgency that comes when you finally lock horns feels all too brief. With that being said, Tekken 6 attempts to compensate by giving a very large number of characters projectile attacks. These feel completely out of place. Juggles are so easy to execute that it seems battles are a contest between who can juggle their opponent first. As for balance... forget about it. It became immediately apparent that Alisa, Lee, Steve and Asuka were higher tier. All in all, a huge cast of characters with bulky movesets can't cover for the fact that Tekken 6 is a shallow fighting game.
And the arcade and story modes don't get much better. AI only ever challenges you to work out the most effective cheap attack pattern. They are stupid at best, spamhappy at worst and higher level AI seem to have access to an auto-juggle button at all times.
Presentation-wise, Tekken 6 is simply not up to scratch, running at a sub-HD resolution with middling-at-best character models. Environments are bland and many stages lend themselves well to wall juggling (have Namco learned nothing from Tekken 4?). You get some cool looking motion blur, but it is disabled unless you run the game at a low resolution with no anti-aliasing. You will hardly notice this though, as the visuals are fugly either way and it is easily the first instance of a Tekken game that does nothing to push the hardware of the system it was ported over to.
So there you have it. Namco does the sort of apathetic thing that should have been expected from them after their recent disappointments and rely once again on a familiar brand to carry a poor fighting game. Does it have any redeeming qualities? Sure, there is a sprawling customisation system and nobody could claim it didn't deliver in terms of the sheer volume of features and content, not least among them being a comprehensive training mode. But this counts for surprisingly little with the big picture in mind. You can get countless hours o gameplay out of Tekken 6 before you have even started the online, just don't expect those hours to be well spent or even pleasant.
Incurable Tekken junkies might be inclined to forgive its faults, but I would advise anybody else never to spend their money on it. If you're looking for some cheap fighting game thrills, the lightning fast gameplay of Dead or Alive 4 offers so much more. Those looking for a rewarding fighting game with depth would be better off playing Virtua Fighter 5 which more than compensates for what it lacks in the sorts of embellishments you'd expect from Tekken with focused, realistic gameplay and a robust tournament mode. with that thought, I wash my hands of Tekken 6. A game that is so much less than the sum of its parts.
