The plot's lost the plot, but still awesome November 14, 2009 M. Wright (England) The main negative I have found with this game was the plot. Unlike the first MW which immersed you in broadly believable scenarios as SAS and Marines, this game seems to have tried to up the ante and has situations more like something out of a Roger Moore Bond film. This for me damaged the experience as I felt more disconnected from it all just by virtue of it being so ridiculously unbelievable - bordering on something out of Resistance: Fall of Man. Plus, I want to be in the SAS - playing as the multinational "Task Force" instead is at times more reminiscent of Rainbow 6 than CoD.
That is the only negative however. Irrespective of an overblown attempt at a Hollywood blockbuster plotline, the game mechanics are pure CoD, and the combat and carnage produce an experience that makes up for the shortcomings. The combat is familiar - the array of weapons, opposing vehicles, shooting through cover, and huge variety of set piece situations.
The online is essentially the same as MW1 but seriously ramped up. There are more weapons and unlockables for them, more perks - and these now have unlockable upgrades. There are emblems and insignias to unlock to personalise your alter ego. You can unlock a wider variety of kill streak options - rather than just UAV, air strike and helicopter. Predator missile strike (guided by the player as it comes down) is a default one, but there is much better than that to unlock. Mission summaries also award you a huge range of accolades - such as killed every team member without dying, lived longest, highest kills:deaths ratio etc. All in all it adds to the enjoyment and interest, while keeping the same fundamental game mechanics beneath.
Overall the game isn't as good as MW1 offline, but the ramped up online means it's still a 5 star game.
Theres something not quite right with modern warfare 2!! November 14, 2009 Bluefox (United Kingdom) 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have played MW1 to death and still enjoy it to this day. Ive been playing MW2 for a few weeks now and have acheived alot but i have realised that the fun level has dropped significantly in this new continuation of the franchise.
Online multiplayer, I have noticed the graphics seem to have become less big and detailed and more smaller and colouful to make up for the bigger maps but this in itself has created the annoying problem of not being able to see your enemy hiding aswell as you could in MW1 hence lots of deaths from camping players hiding in bushes and windows, shooting you before you can see them. Very annoying and destroying the challenging fun factor with repeated deaths by players that have to do very little except aim their gun and press a button.
On the positive the main offline game is very good and challenging but short. The inclusion of the Special Ops missions where you can invite a friend to help you on selected missions is genius and great fun to play.
Its just a shame that Infinity Ward couldnt keep this franchise going strong, but time will tell. x
Game of the year November 14, 2009 Snowey (Worthing: West Sussex) This game is almost guaranteed to be game of 2009 however is it worthy of this prize?
Yes, yes it is however i would not like to be a judge as i just recently enjoyed another gaming masterpiece "Uncharted 2". However back to "Call of duty", this game is far better than the "World at war". The campaign if a little short is very fun and certainly gives you enough training and gets you in the mood for call of duty's most wonderful multiplayer gaming experience. The maps are excellent, the only criticisms i would have is some are a little to big. However the new features added in only enhance the game. In my opinion it is still not as good as COD 4 but this could have something to do with my ego and the fact i think of my self as good at COD 4 and i am finding it difficult to really do as well on MW2, but as time passes and i get used to the maps gun and style of play i could come to love it even more.
Not as good as the Hype, no 5.1 sound November 13, 2009 B. Holleran (Madrid, Spain) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
The game is overall a minor improvement over the first modern warfare in terms of graphics. Lags way behind "Unchartered 2" which is superior in nearly every respect.
The reason I give it three stars is because the sound quality is way behind nearly all of the other PS3 games I have. I was also shocked to find that there is no 5.1 support, although the game is DTS there is no center channel. The voice dialog is, therefore, very difficult to hear.
Disappointed, expected more from a $500 million game :(
Oh My God November 13, 2009 J. Coulthard (Leeds, England) Modern Warfare 2 has to be one of, if not the best game I have ever played. The single player is a fun, blockbuster experience; it's not fantastic but that's not where this game's strengths lie. The multiplayer blew my mind. It's everything CoD4 is and CoD:WaW wanted to be, but with more. The level of cusomization is intense and there is a very nice selction of weaponry and equipment too. I was glad to see the MP5 return in the form of it's big brother, the MP5K, as this was by far my favourite gun in CoD4. The killstreaks are, what I believe to be, one of the strongest replay factors of this game. I love building my way up to the next reward until I finally get the big pay-off. It's just so addictive. I have yet to play Spec-Ops as I am waiting for to play it with one of my friends, but from what I hear, it is a lot of fun and certainly not just something Infinity Ward threw together at the last minute. Anyone who is undecided on whether to buy this game should toss those feelings aside right away. This is easily my game of the year and would rank somewhere in my top 5 games list (a list that would include such heavy hitters as MGS4, CoD4 and InFamous). If it were not for the one day us PS3 owners couldn't play online, I would have nothing bad to say about this game so for those without it, do yourself a favour and go get it immediately!
