Frustrating. June 21, 2010 James N. R. Goad 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First off - It's a bit hard to give FF13 a star rating because some aspects are brilliant & others are very irritating.
Characters and story are always very important in FF games. The characters here are spot on. Vanille & Hope are a bit annoying to start with but they mature as the game progresses & Vanille actually becomes very likable. Lightning & Sazh are my favourites as they are both well rounded & believeable without being too predictable.
The story starts really well & is very focused for the first 25 hours or so but just fizzles out as the game progresses. It's a shame because FF games usually work the other way round with a slow start & a story that gradually draws the player in. FF13's story just loses momentum after chapter 10.
As far as actual gameplay goes, they ironed out some issues from FF12 but massively over simplified things with the Paradigm system. Also, the 'Auto-Battle' is stupid, don't use it. What's the point of having an option where you just have to press X to fight battles? The 'corridor' style is a bit annoying but things improve a lot once the game opens up & you get to roam around more. I really miss the World Map & random battles but perhaps I'm just being old-fasioned. The ATB system was a welcome return but I would have liked to see it combined with the very clever Gambits from FF12. The Hunts were a welcome echo of FF12 but there were no other subgames (How I long for the return of Blitzball!). Weapon upgrades were interesting at first but ultimately pointless because the game can be easily completed without bothering to upgrade anything. The 'Crystarium' for leveling up is a total waste of time because it just isn't versatile enough. Bosses are mostly very simple to defeat. Some of the Esper battles are good & you have to learn how to beat them after losing a few times. Unfortunately the final boss is just pathetic & easily the worst end of game Boss I've ever encountered. My team were all at pretty low levels & it was just laughable. You need to use all your worst characters & equipment just to make it vaguely interesting.
Graphics are beautiful (especially in the weird Forest / Animal training pen area) but my PS3 did struggle to keep up with some cutscenes. FF13 has the most satisfying end sequence I've seen for a very long time.
Basically FF13 starts well, gets better after a while, then ends really badly but you get a great cut-scene as compensation. Usually, when I finish a Final Fantasy game I immediately want to replay it to collect all weapons, finish sidequests etc. Sadly FF13 just made me want to play FF6 again to re-live a proper classic.

good but its not final June 17, 2010 Mr. D. Pilkington (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i waited for ages to get my hands on this game hoping it would be a improvement on 10 and 10-2 only thing that saved them was the excellent mini game blitz ball. but what a waste this is and how long the spent on it too. the graphics are stunning but i expect that from final 7 all the way through to this one have been amazing. but this one has some big problems. first the battle system what have they done its too hard lvl up and everthing you battle seems to be built of rock hitting very low, second if you die you all die why do this, and third is the weapons and items which are totally rubbish because to get them you need gill but the monsters dont drop gill what the hell. a big draw back is the story line there is no free roaming to different citys going to better shops for weapons and having a look instead you are fixed to a very fixed plot and is very boring. sorry but this not final stop messing and create a re work based on the better one ff7.
Absolute Garbage!! June 11, 2010 Grantona 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I really dont know whats happened to this franchise but I revisted both FF7 & FF8 prior to playing this which are now both available for download. So after thoroughly enjoying this 2 titles again after a 10 year absence you can imagine I was immensly looking forward the first release of the series on the PS3. Oh dear, what a total cash in! This game isnt a fraction of the quality of the titles relase on the PS one over 10 years ago and it really hard to explain why its got so bad.
There a number of reasons why this game is total digrace, a lot of which have been mentioned by previous reviewers but I will add my thoughts:
1) Battle System - Whilst FF12 want perfect it still required some thought and strategy. All you do on this game is hit the x button, occasionly shifting to different paridigm when the enemey is a bit harder, which generally means you need one member of your party to cure the others. You only control one character and hope the other 2 do want you want them to. The Eidolons, previously a great apect of the series, are now just in for show as they are totally ineffective in battle - I used them about 3 times in the entire game mainly due to curiousosity. They are all totally ineffective.
2) Map - You literally run down a corridor on every level, often encountering the same enemy again and again which becomes totally tedious and boring. As you progress in the game you often find yourself fighting the same enemy as you did earlier but more of them. Essentially its the same thing over and over but with different scenary. no freedom whatsover, no side quests other than hunting which is pretty dull. Very little variation in enemy - you had loads in previous titles.
3) Upgrading - All characters learn pretty much exactly the same skills and techniques making character development uninteresting. Weapon Upgrades are bizarre to say the least and any development you may think you have is limited by what stage of game you are at. Where are the limit breaks?!
4) The Story - Made no sense whatsoever! All you hear about is falseas and la seas - I didnt know the difference and didnt care to find out. You're never sure who you are fighting against - the enemy in this game is some old man dressed as a bishop who you meet about 3 times who babbles a load of nonsense for about 10 minutes before and during battle. Totally unabsorbing and you just end up hitting the skip button for most of the cut scenes as they are mostly overly long, frequent and pointless. You end up caring nothing for any of the characters.
These are my 4 biggest gripes but I could go on and on. Yes the graphics are top notch but there is no gameplay here making me feel like I was playing nothing more than an interactive movie. Square Enix have lost it big time and have tried to sell everyone a polished turd with this release.
Linear and no freedom June 10, 2010 A. Darbyshire 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I would like to say I have enjoyed most of the final fantasy range barr maybe FFIX. The graphics on this game are outstanding however that is probably the main reason I gave it 2 stars.
This is one of the most linear games have ever played in recent times. I say this as I had almost completed it thinking that I was still in the prolog part of a final fantasy game. leveling is annoying as you cannot progress unless you follow the 1 dimentional plot so if you want to explore a map and find goodies and secret summons then think again. There are about 6 elemental spells 6 status changing spells and 100's of passive skills which dont seem to do anything at all. The combat system is awful as you dont need to do much other than bash X and R1 to change combat style to heal. The variety of enermy is very limited compared to other FF games in that they are all similar monsters in a variety of colours that determine their difficulty ..... yawn. Most monster drops are pointless even the ones that take literally 30 mins of attack and heal give pointless xp and an item worth 100 gil value if your lucky. One of the most annoying things in the game is you get 1 summon per character and they all suck e.g. when 1 sword hit does 22000 damage your biggest baddest mate does 500-1000 and maybe 22000 on the whole summon. The summons are dumb as well, shiva turns into a bike ? come on now. Staggering enemy to kill them is annoying when you need to do it for every single one, long gone are the days of 1 hit kills no matter how tough you are.
All the effot was put into the visual content, the game could so easly be fantastic with a few tweaks in game dynamics and yes the ability to progress without the story.
Finally FF fans wait until its under £10 and to anyone else wait until its free.
